Dead or Alive….?

Following on from last year’s Malice In Blunderland, Director Tony Barry and the Cúchulainn Players again provide a light-hearted commentary on the state of affairs in contemporary Ireland with their production of Skullduggery which will be staged in the Táin Theatre, Town Hall, Dundalk from Thursday February 16th to Saturday February 18^th.

It features the ‘residents’ of Kilmactranny Passage Grave who are all dead……or are they..?

Casting a jaundiced eye on those who today perpetuate the greed of the last decade or so, the ‘residents’ themselves have come to grips with what they have done during their lives above ground, acknowledge their mistakes and then prepare to move on to the next level of their existence.

A motley crew from across the ages, they rattle around underground to foot-tapping music and hilarious dance and dialogue routines providing for audiences a great antidote to the austerity blues.

A lively mix of Cúchulainn Players veterans, talented newcomers, terrific newly-composed music from Tony’s sons Éamonn, Ruairí and Fionán, and award-winning dancers from Funky Feet ( all under the watchful eyes and ears of choreographer Stacey Murnaghan and Chorus Mistress Liz McConnon ) will ensure a sparkling night’s entertainment.

Jaki McCarrick’s LEOPOLDVILLE shines a bright light on the destructive power of directionless young men.  Set in 1990 in an Irish border town, a gang of teenage boys with few prospects ends a long night of “adventure” by breaking into “The Congo”, a pub owned by a well-traveled widower.  When the owner comes back and claims to have no valuables, no African diamonds, nothing more than the cash in the till, the gang starts to fall apart, and things spiral out of control.

About the playwright:
Jaki McCarrick is a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin. Her first play, The Mushroom Pickers, won the 2005 Scottish Drama Association’s National Playwriting Competition and premiered at the Southwark Playhouse in London in May 2006 and in New York in February 2009. Her most recent play, Leopoldville, was this year selected by David Hare as a finalist in the 2010 Yale Drama Series Playwriting Competition – and won the 2010 Papatango New Writing Award. The play was recently staged at the Tristan Bates Theatre in London to much critical acclaim.

Tom Loves a Lord is a one man play written and performed by Martin Dyar together with some of Moore’s Melodies sung by Anna-Louise Costello.

Largely settled by Irish immigrant workers during the 1800?s, the downtown part of Montréal called Griffintown vaguely lies within Notre Dame to the north, Guy to the west and McGill streets to the east, stopping at the Lachine Canal. Towards the end of the 1960?s, most of the community moved away because of  Forming in Montreal in November 2009, Théâtre Ruais a two person theatre ensemble. Both members, Clíona de Brí and Laura Flynn hail from Ireland. For Théâtre Rua, the actor and audience is central to creation.  Griffintownis Théâtre Rua?s debut creation.

Through their love of play, Clíona and Laura devised a piece using stories from the Montreal neighbourhood of Griffintown with the idea of community at the core.

The Rhythm of Strife

What can happen in a town in a week?  A migrant man becomes a local hero only to lose everything.  A female Garda is plagued by a personal health secret.  A priest is the subject of gossip.  An unemployed musician gets lucky in love and comes to understand his mother’s grief.  A young girl gets lucky in love with the unemployed musician while her feckless father is traumatised by a fire.  A free-living hippy girl witnesses the fire and doesn’t care.  A fallen aristocrat falls further only to rise again.

In November 2009, Upstate Theatre Project and St. Brigid’s Drama Group agreed to collaborate on a new ‘exploratory’ community drama programme.  Out of this has come a new play for 20 performers, based on group improvisation and collective writing.

The play is set in 2010, in a large fictitious town in County Louth, Irelandwhich has a major regional hospital as well as the usual civic and private buildings and spaces common to all towns.  It begins at the local Saturday market and follows the fortunes of seven diverse characters, their families and associates, across various locations, concluding seven days later at the same weekly market.

Hilarious and poignant, a fast-paced, 24/7, ‘slice-of-life’ comedy-drama that will entertain and engage Droghedaaudiences for 3 nights only.  Book now!
