We all know about the Da Vinci Code, but what do we know about Leonardo Da Vinci, and Michelangelo and Raphael? And could we learn to draw, using their methods?
Two new courses, accredited by Queen’s university will offer some intriguing answers to these questions.
Starting in Dundalk’s Basement Gallery in May, the courses, ‘An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance and ‘Classical Drawing: Learning from the Masters’, will be facilitated by art historian and artist, Anne Callanan. Anne talked to us about the new Queen’s courses:
‘Both courses offer a wonderful opportunity to those interested in art history and improving or learning how to draw. No experience is required just a interest in learning something new in a ambient environment.
‘The setting couldn’t be more perfect in the Basement Gallery – almost custom built for the course. Just like the old schools in Florence which tended not to have much direct sunlight.
‘We are very grateful to the Basement Gallery for allowing us to use their fantastic space.’
Anne has been a part- time lecturer with Queen’s University Belfast and has spent the last two years working between Florence and Ireland where she was a guest lecturer in an American University. While there she worked in various art studio/atelier improving her own artistic technique. Anne lives in Dundalk and wants to share her knowledge of Italy and its art with you.
Anne explained what the two courses are about: ‘An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance’ is an art history course which will cover Renaissance and Baroque art. Artists considered will be Leonardo Da Vinci (including his latest work in London, Salvator Mundi), Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, Veronese & Tintoretto to name but a few.
‘The second part of the course will concentrate on Italian Baroque focusing on the Mannerist style in Rome. Others artists like Velazquez and Ribera from the Spanish school will be discussed, showing how Caravaggio had such a strong influence on their work.
‘The other course, ‘Classical Drawing: Learning from the Masters’, is really a practical, hands-on drawing course, but is unique in that we will be following the methods practised by great artists over the ages.
‘So, we will learn from Velasquez, Van Gogh, Sargent, Picasso and later David Hockney. The course aims to train the eye to perceive shapes, values and proportion.
‘Remember, if you can write your name you can learn to draw.’
‘An Introduction to the Italian Renaissance’ begins on 1st May between 10-12am and runs for 5 weeks.
‘Classical Drawing: Learning from the Masters’, begins on 2th May, between 10-12am and runs for five weeks.
Each course is worth 5 CATS points within Queen’s University’s Open Learning Programme. Each course costs £43. You can enrol online from 19th March onwards at www.qub.ac.uk/edu/ol
