Call for proposals from professional artists, arts collectives, and arts companies based in the North East [Louth, Meath, Monaghan or Cavan] and working in any genre to support the presentation of new work at the Drogheda Arts Festival in May 2019 or May 2020.
The Drogheda Arts Festival:
Set against the backdrop of the Boyne Valley’s cultural capital, the Drogheda Arts Festival takes place each year during the May bank holiday weekend. The first festival of the summer swings into action with an eclectic mix of theatre, music, traditional arts, literature and spoken word, visual art, family and outdoor activities for all ages. The festival is supported by Louth County Council and the Arts Council, and is programmed and delivered by a voluntary committee. This commission is open to professional artists at any stage in their career looking to present new work in a festival setting. The aim of the commission is to assist artists living in the North East region to present new work and develop their professional practice. This new work can take any form – including visual arts interventions (please note both Highlanes Gallery and Droichead Arts Centre will be separately programmed, so all visual arts proposals should be outside of these two spaces), performance of new music compositions, scripted theatre, off-site dance, and everything in between – we are not prescriptive about in the manner in which you work, only that the work is new, ambitious, and professional.
The successful artist or arts collective will be selected by a shortlisting and interview process, based on artist(s) CV, proposal, budget, previous work, and references.

With some of the finest traditional musicians in the world heading to Drogheda over the next few weeks, we can expect to hear some exceptional music in the bars and on the streets from players and singers from as far away as California, Japan and New Zealand. But it is also undeniable that Louth is home to some exceptionally talented traditional musicians of our own, and a new radio series will shine a light on some our Louth musical heroes.
Ceol sa Bhaile is the name of four 25-minute radio programmes which will be broadcast on LMFM over the week of the Fleadh. Each programme takes as its subject one of Louth’s finest traditional artists, and has been recorded in each of the four chosen musician’s houses. As well as speaking about their lives and their music, each musician plays or sings in the kitchen or living room of their home, hence the programme title.
“The idea of the radio programmes is two-fold,” says County Arts Officer, Brian Harten. “We want to ensure that people know that we have world-class musicians on our own doorstep, and we also want to introduce these musicians to listeners in their own homes, not on the concert stage.”
The musicians chosen in this first strand of programmes are fiddlers Gerry O’Connor and Zoë Conway, and singers Gerry Cullen, and Stuart and Pat Carolan. Interviewing these stand-out musicians is Drogheda man, SJ McArdle, himself an acclaimed singer/songwriter, and more recently one third of Kern.
“It was an absolute privilege to speak at length to all of these legends, especially as we were welcomed so warmly into their homes. Each and every one of the musicians spoke very openly about their upbringing, where they got their music from, where their music has brought them, and each of them were honest about the challenges they face as traditional musicians. And we got tea and biscuits everywhere we went!”
The first programme will be broadcast on LMFM on Tuesday 14th of August from 12 noon to 12.30pm on the Mid Morning Show, and a new Ceol sa Bhaile will air each day until Friday 17th. The programmes, in an extended format, will be available afterwards as podcasts. Ceol sa Bhaile was commissioned by CreateLouth, the Arts Service of Louth County Council, with support from the Arts Council, to mark Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann coming to Drogheda.

Droichead Arts Centre Open Call Print Exhibition
Open Call for Exhibition exploring the many facets of contemporary print making; including but not limited to etching, lithography, screen print, monoprint, digital (giclée pigment prints), photocopy etc. Welcoming works that consider installation and three dimensional possibilities of print making.
Droichead Arts Centre invites professional artists currently living and working in the North East Region (Meath, Louth, Cavan, Monaghan) to submit up to six works for inclusion in this exhibition, which will be curated by independent artist/curator Dorothy Smith.

Maynooth University (Department of Adult and Community
The Certificate in Directing for Theatre is a Level 7 course. It is a practical course taught by Irish
professional directors. It focuses on methods, tips and techniques, application of theory, and practice. This
course is aimed at the following potential students:
? Mature students (21 years and over) who wish to train for the theatre industry in Ireland and who
would like to be prepared for further study in the field of directing;
? Those who wish to explore the field to discover if they wish to make a career in it. In this sense the
Certificate serves as a skills-based training course for new directors;
? Those in the amateur, youth theatre and community theatre sectors, who wish to formalise their
experience into specific training, acquire accreditation and gain additional skills by doing so;
? Those who are emerging directors in fringe and professional theatre and who wish to gain specific
skills and to acquire accreditation;
? Teachers and education workers who would like to train in directing in order to stage productions
? To introduce students to fundamental skills of directing for theatre

Participants must be 21 years or over and have the academic capacity to complete a course at university
level. Assistance is available free on campus with academic writing, library use, and assignment support.
They must also have the capacity to direct a public performance during the course of the year and so
access to at least one performer is necessary.

Maynooth University students, and to national student discounts where available.
The course is coordinated by Peter Hussey (Artistic Director of Crooked House). Additional regular tutors in
previous years have been Annie Ryan (Artistic Director of The Corn Exchange), Jo Mangan (Artistic
Director of Performance Corporation), John O’ Brien (freelance director and company manager), Bairbre Ni
Chaoimh (founder of Calypso Theatre Company and freelance director), Tom Swift (writer and AD of
Performance Corporation) and Louise Lowe (Artistic Director of Anu Productions). Classes have also been
taught in the past by Jimmy Fay, Annabelle Comyn, Jason Byrne and Mary Duffin.
1. Students keep a Learning Journal in which they record and critically reflect on their learning, brought
about by this course. They write an essay based on this Journal and submit the essay. For those who
prefer other media, the ‘essay’ may also be submitted as a short film or audio documentary.
2. Major Directing Project – each student will be expected to direct a piece of theatre that is more than 30
minutes long. This is recorded and the film submitted. This can be privately produced (no public
attendance) and be a performance for one performer. Or it can be a public show (possibly necessitating
hiring a venue, acquiring rights to perform, marketing and insuring the show etc). It may be devised,
scripted, collated or movement-based. However, it may not be a dance performance or opera (although it
may have elements of these in it).
3. Directors’ Log – this is a written (or recorded) documentation of your process of staging the play, and it
should also contain your reflection on the experience.
It is important to note that Department of Adult and Community Education Regulations prohibit a student
from being awarded a grade/mark or a certificate if they:
– do not attend at least 85% of the course
– do not submit all assignments
– do not pass each assignment.
All assignments are due to be submitted to Maynooth on or by Friday 7th June 2019 at 5.00pm.
It is not possible for the course to provide assistance with casting, venue hire, or staging productions
required as part of the assignments. We will provide advice, information and in-class support as part of the
teaching and learning of the programme. Students should make provision to stage, and film their work
themselves (in the way one would research and write an essay oneself). This means students should be
able to find a performer or performers for their directing project. It helps if the student is a member of a
drama group, has access to actors, or can work with a youth theatre. However, not being in this position is
by no means a major barrier to participation: if the student wishes, the project does not need to be staged
for the public, but can be mounted privately, using friends and collaborators, and filmed.
The filming quality does not need to be professional. The assessor simply needs to see the full range of the
stage/performing area, clearly hear the dialogue, and see the performers’ expressions and actions.

100 hours part-time over one year, on two Saturdays per month, from September to May, excluding
holidays at Christmas and Easter. Class begins at 10.00am and runs to 5.00pm (with a break of 1 hour for
lunch at 1.00pm, and coffee breaks in the morning and afternoon).
FEE €1,250. This course is a Level 7 course (BA Degree level). Fees are set by the university.
