Louth Contemporary Music Society present a new arrangement of Seán Ó Riada’s Mass for 16 voices, fiddle, harp and bodhrán in St.Nicholas’ Church of Ireland (The Green Church), Church St, Dundalk on Saturday 10 March 2012.

The music of composer Seán Ó Riada, who is credited with re-igniting the popularity of Irish traditional music, is celebrated by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) in a unique performance of a new arrangement of his Mass on 10 March 2012 in Dundalk.

The new arrangement was completed by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, a composer of international fame. A native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he most recently has been a composer-in-residence at Harvard University and Dartmouth College. Yanov-Yanovsky has received commissions from celebrated musicians including the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet and Hilliard Ensemble. Yanov-Yanovsky’s music was first performed in Ireland at LCMS’s Sounds of the Silk Road Concert as part of Drogheda Arts Festival in 2011. Yanov-Yanovsky has arranged the mass for 16 voices, fiddle, harp and bodhrán. The mass will be performed by the finest Irish professional singers in the newly formed EQ Singers, with Zoe Conway on fiddle, Laoise Kelly on harp and Mel Mercier on bodhrán. The choir and musicians will be conducted by Eamonn Dougan of The Sixteen. The performance will take place in St. Nicholas’ Church of Ireland (The Green Church), Dundalk Co. Louth at 8pm on Saturday 10 March 2012.

Iarla Ó Lionáird will perform a selection of sacred hymns before the choral performance. It is fitting that Iarla Ó Lionáird will take part in this event. Iarla Ó Lionáird grew up in Cúil Aodha, Cork. His neighbour Seán Ó Riada was often in the Ó Lionáird home and the young Iarla was a member of Ó Riada’s choir, which he entered in childhood and remained in into his early twenties.

Additionally, Tomás Ó Canainn, author of ‘Seán Ó Riada – his life and work’, will give a talk on Ó Riada, his music and the masses in the Space,Town Hall Crowe St, Dundalk at 5pm on Saturday 10 March 2012. The talk is free but it is advised to book tickets in advance.

New Cultural Event for Carlingford.

This Halloween sees a new cultural event take place in Carlingford.

The Carlingford Canadian/Irish Cultural Day, which has been organised by those cultural trailblazers Carlingford Community Development, examines the cultural links between Carlingford and Canada. The highlight of this inaugural cultural event will be the Carlingford premier of the play “Griffintown”.

Griffintown by two piece théâtre group Théâtre Rua, is a dramatic piece of theatre, set in Montreal’s Irish community.

So grab your passport, compass and map, let Théâtre Rua take you down to Griffintown.

Having enjoyed a successful run with Griffintown at the St-Ambroise Montréal Fringe Festival in June 2010, two performers, with a suitcase full of characters, bring to life a once upon-a-time Irish neighbourhood in Montréal in a fun and playful way through the art of storytelling and physical theatre.

Théâtre Rua is a two person ensemble made of Dundalk girl, Laura Flynn and Clíona de Brí from Prosperous, Co. Kildare. Originally founded in Montréal in 2009, Théâtre Rua now based in Ireland, will be providing their premier Carlingford performance, in the Foy Centre.

An interesting connection to Carlingford for the hstorians out there is that Griffintown is an area once represented by Carlingford’s own Thomas D’arcy Magee). Thios productionhas been supported by Create Louth.

Through their love of play, Laura and Clíona have devised a piece using stories from the Montréal neighbourhood of Griffintown with the idea of community at the core. A large number of Ireland’s first emigrants found themselves in Québec and Griffintown became a hot pot of Canadian Irish culture.

Also on the Griffintown bill, there will be two bands playing live.

TEAS: pronounced chass is the Irish word for “heat” which aptly describes the energy brought to bear by a traditional band that everyone is beginning to take notice of. This four
piece band, blend Irish traditional and contemporary folk influences in a wonderful tapestry of sounds.

TEAS comprised of Brendan McCreanor (uilleann pipes/low whistle/tin whistle),Áine Murphy (flute/tin whistle) Barry Kieran (fiddle) and Seán Ó Roideáin (vocals/guitar),have played festivals including Fleadh Cheoil, and Muckno-Mania and will be headlining at Íontas Theatre, Castleblayney in December.

great cultural links between Carlingford and Canada through theatre, music, song and workshops. When once again our people are faced with
mass emigration from home, the Canadian/Irish cultural day will provide a chance to recall the cultural contribution the Irish diaspora have made in general
to the countries they have migrated to and to Canada in particular. So come along to the Carlingford Canadian/Irish Cultural Day and enjoy a day of fun, culture and craic!”

The Carlingford/Irish Cultural day is presented by Carlingford Community Development, in association with Carlingford Lough Youth Peace Project (CLYPP) and Carlingford Cultural Quarter (a new cultural tourism initiative).

The wonderful recovery of the traditional music of Ireland and the blossoming and innovation that has occurred over the past 60 years, not only in Ireland but all over the world is truly amazing!

This music flowed out into the world in all kind of ways, positively affecting the many people who have come to love this music.

This poses a question for me “What if this awakening of the music is but the first phase of the awakening of the ancient spiritual tradition and power of this country, which has until now, been hidden in the mist of time?” This question begs another question. What might be the consequences in Ireland and in the world if ,we as a people ,decided to search and recover other layers of the Celtic spiritual tradition with the same dedication and enthusiasm invested in recovering the tradition music of this country?

And what if this is the great challenge of our time?

This musically illustrated talk will explore

* The deep connection between Music and Spirituality

*Central aspects of the Celtic spiritual tradition

*Simple ways to recover the essence of this tradition within our daily lives
