The music of composer Seán Ó Riada, who is credited with re-igniting the popularity of Irish traditional music, is celebrated by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) in a unique performance of a new arrangement of his Mass on 10 March 2012 in Dundalk.

The new arrangement was completed by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, a composer of international fame. A native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he most recently has been a composer-in-residence at Harvard University and Dartmouth College. Yanov-Yanovsky has received commissions from celebrated musicians including the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet and Hilliard Ensemble. Yanov-Yanovsky’s music was first performed in Ireland at LCMS’s Sounds of the Silk Road Concert as part of Drogheda Arts Festival in 2011. Yanov-Yanovsky has arranged the mass for 16 voices, fiddle, harp and bodhrán. The mass will be performed by the finest Irish professional singers in the newly formed EQ Singers, with Zoe Conway on fiddle, Laoise Kelly on harp and Mel Mercier on bodhrán. The choir and musicians will be conducted by Eamonn Dougan of The Sixteen. The performance will take place in St. Nicholas’ Church of Ireland (The Green Church), Dundalk Co. Louth at 8pm on Saturday 10 March 2012.

Iarla Ó Lionáird will perform a selection of sacred hymns before the choral performance. It is fitting that Iarla Ó Lionáird will take part in this event. Iarla Ó Lionáird grew up in Cúil Aodha, Cork. His neighbour Seán Ó Riada was often in the Ó Lionáird home and the young Iarla was a member of Ó Riada’s choir, which he entered in childhood and remained in into his early twenties.

Additionally, Tomás Ó Canainn, author of ‘Seán Ó Riada – his life and work’, will give a talk on Ó Riada, his music and the masses in the Space,Town Hall Crowe St, Dundalk at 5pm on Saturday 10 March 2012. The talk is free but it is advised to book tickets in advance.

Louth Contemporary Music Society presents Metamorphoses

“Louth Contemporary Music Society is one of the most adventurous music promoters in Ireland.” Michael Dervan, The Irish Times

Formed in 2006, Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) has an impeccable record for excellence and innovation in contemporary music programming in Ireland. The company not only presents the leading international composers of our time, but fosters genuine engagement through new commissions and cleverly-curated collaborations with leading international and Irish performers. This is continued in Metamorphoses, LCMS’s second concert in the ‘Sounds of the Silk Road” series and will take place at 8pm on Saturday 22 October 2011 in St.Peter’s Church of Ireland Drogheda.

Metamorphoses will feature new specially commissioned work by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, a highly talented and well regarded composer from Tashkent, Uzbekistan a country at the crossroads of the rich and oriental and Islamic traditions of Central Asia. The piece Viderunt Omnes is a piece for 8 celli and percussion based on Perotin’s Viderunt Omnes. LCMS organised the first performance and commission of Yanov-Yanovksy in Ireland in 2011.

The concert will also feature two of Sofia Gubaidulina’s works: On the Edge of the Abyss for 7 celli and 2 waterphones and Mirage: The Dancing Sun. The term ‘abyss’, stands here for the zone between the fingerboard and the bridge of a string instrument. Ms Gubaidulina was born in Chistopol in the Tatar Republic in 1931, attended a performance of her music in Drogheda in 2010 organised by LCMS.

Composer Alexander Knaifel whose music featured in a LCMS portrait concert in Drogheda in 2009. In this concert his work The Comforter written for nine cellos is a gorgeous work based on an orthodox liturgical prayer. Knaifel, originally a cellist (but had to give up the instrument due to a nerve inflammation) was born in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) in 1943 and naturally turned to composition.

Also in the concert Franghiz Ali- Zadeh will perform her Music for Piano. Raymond Tuttle notes in a review “At the recording sessions, she “prepared” the piano by placing a beaded necklace she had been wearing across the piano strings. The result is straight piano music accompanied by a fantastic rattling highly reminiscent of another indigenous Azerbaijani instrument, the tar”.

Ivan Monighetti will join Franghiz for a performance of her work Habil sayaghi (Habil’s Style) for cello and piano a work dedicated to Ivan Monighetti. Habil sayaghi for cello and prepared piano (1979) was a breakthrough work for the composer as she incorporated elements of of the Azerbaijani virtuosic improvisatory style called mugham in the work.

The concert will end with a performance of Franghiz Ali-Zadeh’s Shyshtar Metamorphoses which was originally written for the 12 cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic.

As members of the Aga Khan Music Trust will attend the performance, there will be a free wine reception at the interval for all the audience.

Metamorphoses also features the first poster design by Reza Abedini, a world renowned Iranian designer and a professor of graphic design and visual culture at Tehran University. www.rezaabedini.com

Metamorphoses is presented by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS). Funded by a private Swiss foundation, and financially supported by the Arts Council and Create Louth, the concert is dedicated to Sofia Gubaidulina who celebrates her 80th birthday on 24 October 2011.

BBC Music Magazine gives Path a 5 star review : A mesmerising disc of new folk inspired works.

BBC Music Magazine gives PATH 5 Stars for Performance and Recording

Chamber works by Medyulyanova, Nadarejshvili, Part, Tavener, Vrebalov & Yanovsky, The Carducci Quartet; Dublin Guitar Quartet; Patricia Rozario, Eamonn Dougan, Joachim Roewer, Malachy Robinson etc
Louth Contemporary Music Society LCMS 1001 65:29 mins BBC Music Direct £11.99 or alternatively available from www.louthcms.org/path

Except for the extract from Nadarejshvili’s quartet all these pieces are receiving their premiere recording (Part’s Summa is realised by guitar quartet here), and all are rooted in ancient folk traditions.

Yanovsky’s piece is inspired by the Chang, a traditional Uzbeki stringed instrument. To evoke this, the quartet uses plucking and percussive techniques, vividly conjuring visions of folk-dances surviving from time immemorial, but the opening materialises from ethereal notes which gradually give way to more corporeal, though no less mysterious, sounds. The Carducci Quartet also performs the third movement of Nadarejshvili’s quartet, a threnody drawing on Georgian folk sources that evolves from restrained pizzicato gestures above a quiet drone to an outcry about the experiences of Georgia under Stalinism.

Part’s Face to Face for soprano, baritone, clarinet, viola and bass contains some of his bleakest ever music but, by the end of its brief span, this meditation on St Paul’s ‘through a glass darkly’ epistle is imbued with the A major light of understanding. Tavener’s Samaveda effectively, features the tampura and flute to surround Patricia Rozario’s voice with intimations of eternal wisdom. Rozario is also featured to impressive effect on Epistle.

Medyulyanova’s Eternal Peace, beautifully’ sung by Doreen Curran, is a comparatively, lush piece of neo-Romanticism, contrasting dramatically with Vrebalov’s Spell, a mesmerising piece for violin interacting with live electronics and pre-recorded choral fragments. Barry Witherden PERFORMANCE ***** RECORDING *****

The Sirin Choir from Moscow Russia sing church chants and spiritual verses in St.Nicholas’ Church (The Green Church) Dundalk at 8pm on 5 May 2011

… beautiful to hear and deeply affecting. (Irish Examiner, Ireland)

The amazing Sirin Choir from Russia will perform in St.Nicholas’ Church ( the Green Church) Dundalk on 5 May 2011. The programme will include modern day choral masterpieces such as Louth Contemporary Music Society Commissions Arvo Pärt’s The Deer’s Cry and John Tavener’s O My People along with a selection of Church Chants and Spiritual verses from the 15th and 16th centuries. Some of the Church Chants will be performed a cappella with a selection of the spiritual verses accompanied by hurdy-gurdy, psaltery or violin.

Sirin Choir was formed in 1989 by a group of professional musicians who took the name after a bird of Paradise from Russian Christian legends. Before that Andrey Kotov, Sirin’s Artistic Director spent many years studying Russian sacred folklore in rural settings where these ancient traditions are still preserved. His research has meant that Sirin is uniquely able to present repertoire ranging from the dark, sonorous style of Old Believers’ church to the haunting songs of spiritual wanderers.

The ensemble has presented its interpretation of Russian church and spiritual folk music on extensive concert tours in Russia and Europe and was multifold prizewinner of renowned choral competitions. Sirin took part in the 1st European Symposium for Choral Music in Ljubliana, World Symposium for Choral Music in Rotterdam, gave performances at various festivals, like the festival in Thoronet and the festival of Old Lyon (France), Musica Sacra in Marktoberdorf (Germany), Old Music in Jaroslaw (Poland), Musica Sacra in Maastricht ( Holland), Trialogos (Estonia), Isle de France , Lufthansa Baroque Festival (Great Britain), Cork International Choral festival (Ireland), Sacred Music in Fribourg (Switzerland), Festival of Sacred Music in Fez, Bangkok Christmas Festival (Thailand), Europalia (Belgium) and many others. Sirin’s performances were included in the program for celebrating 2000 years of christianity in Jerusalem.

As a special request of Sirin, the Russian composer Vladimir Martynov set texts from the Old Testament’s book The Lamentation of Jeremiah to music. The stage version of The Lamentation of Jeremiah, where all roles are performed by Sirin members, had more than 150 performances in Russia, France (as part of the official program of Avignon Theatre Festival), Italy, Germany, Estonia and Sweden. It was awarded with Golden Mask, the highest distinction in Russian theatre, as the best theatrical production of the year.

…consummate vocal skills and absolute professionalism. This choir deserves the mark “excellent and higher”. (Compact, Spain)

…the genuine feeling carried in the group’s performance stirred profound emotions… offering clear lessons to those who fancy the worldwide supremacy of the English choral tradition (The Independent, UK)

…beauty of this singing resembles the singing of seraphim (Esslingen Zeitung, Germany)

…Immediate shock from the first sounds… After listening to the recording you have only one wish: to hear this rare repertoire at a concert, to have direct contact with these superb and exciting voices. (Diapason, France)

This is the first time the Hilliard ensemble, have been involved with an Irish based commission and it is also Dmitri’s first Irish commission. Dimitri Yanov-Yanovsky was born in 1963 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. As the musicologist Gerard McBurney says “His remarkable surroundings are vividly reflected in his music. What is most impressive is the skill with which he weaves the colourful threads of contradictory influences into a musical fabric always refined, beautifully patterned and absolutely personal”

The piece ‘Morning’ based on text from Robert Lax’s poem ‘Morning’, from his book called Circus of the Sun described by the New York Times as one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. Lax was also a friend of the writer, monk and mystic Thomas Merton. The performance will also include another of Dmitri’s works called Nightmusic – Voices in the Leaves which was written for Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.

World renowned Lydia Kavina will open the concert with a contemporary piece called Kitezh 19, by Iraida Yusupova. Iraida is Russian but was born in Turkmenistan.
Lydia plays music on a theremin, an electronic instrument which makes music without touching. It is an unusual instrument based upon the technology of proximity meters and was invented and pioneered by Lydia’s great uncle Leon Theremin in the 1920’s. Leon Theremin was a Russian engineer who invented the electronic musical instrument that bears his name, and his story is as strange as the music the thing produces. After experimenting with radio vacuum tubes, Theremin developed a machine (1917-20) whose pitch and volume could be controlled by the movements of the performer’s hands — without touching the instrument. The instrument was demonstrated for Vladimir Lenin, who was so impressed he ordered their mass production and asked Theremin to give him lessons.

Theremin also taught and mentored Lydia to play with the exceptional skill and feeling she shows in her performances today. She has become an icon for performances with the Theramin and will be giving a workshop on the instrument for both beginners and advanced players whilst she is in Ireland.

The concert and events are the latest of several high profile art music events organised by the Louth Contemporary Music Society which have brought world renowned composers to Ireland, previously having successfully featured, Arvo Pärt, Philip Glass, Terry Riley, Valentyn Silvestov and to the 2010 Drogheda Arts Festival, the Russian composer Sofia Gubaidulina.

Eamonn Quinn, Artistic Director with the LCMS, spoke about the forthcoming event.“Sounds of the Silk Road is another step on LCMS remarkable musical jourmey this time into the glorious melting pot of music from the East. LCMS already have an association with Yanov Yanovksy as the Carducci Quartet recorded his Chang Music IV for our critically acclaimed CD ‘Path’. It is very exciting to be able to bring the works of Dmitri Yanov Yanovsky and performers of the calibre of the Hilliard Ensemble, Ivan Monighetti and Lydia Kavina together here in Ireland. We are a small society trying to make a big difference to Contemporary music in Ireland.”

The event in April will be the first of three major events to make up the Sounds of the Silk Road series. Two more major performance events, ‘Dervish’ and ‘Fire and Water’ will follow later this year and in 2012, continuing the Silk Road theme and will feature a composer from Azerbaijan and a Chinese composer.

To enrich the experience of the Silk Road this April, LCMS are also organising additional Silk Road arts events during the Drogheda Arts Festival. These will include a free showing of a film about the Silk Road on 29 April at 6.30pm in the Barbican Drogheda and a children’s art workshop with painting on silk, called Silk Worm on Sat morning 30 April at 11am in Barlow House, Drogheda . The screening and workshop are both free.

Sounds of the Silk Road is presented by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) in association with Create Louth. The event is funded by The Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and financially supported by Create Louth.

Tickets for the performance priced €15 are available from www.centralticketbureau.com and Droichead Online Booking Service www.droicheadartscentre.com/booking. Tickets for the screening of the film The Silk Road are available from the festival box office in Droichead. Lydia Kavina will also give a free workshop on the music of the Theremin on the day of the concert for the interested and simply curious. The venue and time of the workshop will be announced later.

The Sounds of the Silk Road is part of the Drogheda Arts Festival. The Drogheda Arts Festival will run at various venues in Drogheda from 29 April to 1 May 2011. For programme details, arts events and biographies of Dmitri Yanov Yanovsky, Ivan Monighetti, the Hilliard Ensemble, Lydia Kavina and all the performers see www.louthcms.org www.droghedaartsfestival.ie and www.createlouth.ie

It’s not obvious from the bright, abstract packaging what this CD contains. Eight of nine tracks are world premiere recordings. The title relates, obliquely, to Italian composer Luigi Nono’s observation: “There are no roads, but we must go on.” The acoustic music, performed by the Carducci Quartet, Dublin Guitar Quartet and others, is by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, Arvo Pärt, John Tavener and less familiar names. Truly a hidden gem. Fiona Maddocks. The Observer.
