“Louth Contemporary Music Society is one of the most adventurous music promoters in Ireland.”Michael Dervan, The Irish Times

Louth Contemporary Music Society present a new arrangement of Seán Ó Riada’s Mass for 16 voices, fiddle, harp and bodhrán in St.Nicholas’ Church of Ireland (The Green Church), Church St, Dundalk on Saturday 10 March 2012.

The music of composer Seán Ó Riada, who is credited with re-igniting the popularity of Irish traditional music, is celebrated by Louth Contemporary Music Society (LCMS) in a unique performance of a new arrangement of his Mass on 10 March 2012 in Dundalk.

The new arrangement was completed by Dmitri Yanov-Yanovsky, a composer of international fame. A native of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he most recently has been a composer-in-residence at Harvard University and Dartmouth College. Yanov-Yanovsky has received commissions from celebrated musicians including the renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet and Hilliard Ensemble. Yanov-Yanovsky’s music was first performed in Ireland at LCMS’s Sounds of the Silk Road Concert as part of Drogheda Arts Festival in 2011. Yanov-Yanovsky has arranged the mass for 16 voices, fiddle, harp and bodhrán. The mass will be performed by the finest Irish professional singers in the newly formed EQ Singers, with Zoe Conway on fiddle, Laoise Kelly on harp and Mel Mercier on bodhrán. The choir and musicians will be conducted by Eamonn Dougan of The Sixteen. The performance will take place in St. Nicholas’ Church of Ireland (The Green Church), Dundalk Co. Louth at 8pm on Saturday 10 March 2012.

Iarla Ó Lionáird will perform a selection of sacred hymns before the choral performance. It is fitting that Iarla Ó Lionáird will take part in this event. Iarla Ó Lionáird grew up in Cúil Aodha, Cork. His neighbour Seán Ó Riada was often in the Ó Lionáird home and the young Iarla was a member of Ó Riada’s choir, which he entered in childhood and remained in into his early twenties.

Additionally, Tomás Ó Canainn, author of ‘Seán Ó Riada – his life and work’, will give a talk on Ó Riada, his music and the masses in the Space,Town Hall Crowe St, Dundalk at 5pm on Saturday 10 March 2012. The talk is free but it is advised to book tickets in advance.

Dear Principals and Music Teachers,
Please find attached and below some information about “Peace Proms 2012”. We would be very grateful if you could circulate this information to all of the Primary Schools in your area.

“Peace Proms” is a choral education and performance programme is run each year by the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland. 7,000 children from over 250 schools throughout Ireland are involved in the programme.More information is available by downloading the programme here.

All of the children and schools who participate in “Peace Proms” get the opportunity to:
· perform with a full symphony orchestra
· work with leading professional conductors and musicians
· and perform in premier venues.
· NOTE: Louth Schools will perform in the Helix, DCU with the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland on Sunday 26th February 2012.

“Peace Proms” is a 6 month choral education programme suitable for children aged 9 – 13 years. The programme is invaluable for schools which want to start a choir for the first time and so can easily be taught be teachers who have no previous choral experience. The project is also extremely rewarding for schools which have well established choirs.

“Peace Proms” makes the Arts more accessible to young people, their school, families and the wider community, and provides an opportunity for cooperation among children, parents, teachers, school boards and governors.

The project objective is to help young people to develop qualities of self-reliance, personal integrity, responsibility, and confidence. The aim of the programme is to entertain, educate and engage children and young people in music and to enrich their lives through exceptional musical experiences and performances.

The Sirin Choir from Moscow Russia sing church chants and spiritual verses in St.Nicholas’ Church (The Green Church) Dundalk at 8pm on 5 May 2011

… beautiful to hear and deeply affecting. (Irish Examiner, Ireland)

The amazing Sirin Choir from Russia will perform in St.Nicholas’ Church ( the Green Church) Dundalk on 5 May 2011. The programme will include modern day choral masterpieces such as Louth Contemporary Music Society Commissions Arvo Pärt’s The Deer’s Cry and John Tavener’s O My People along with a selection of Church Chants and Spiritual verses from the 15th and 16th centuries. Some of the Church Chants will be performed a cappella with a selection of the spiritual verses accompanied by hurdy-gurdy, psaltery or violin.

Sirin Choir was formed in 1989 by a group of professional musicians who took the name after a bird of Paradise from Russian Christian legends. Before that Andrey Kotov, Sirin’s Artistic Director spent many years studying Russian sacred folklore in rural settings where these ancient traditions are still preserved. His research has meant that Sirin is uniquely able to present repertoire ranging from the dark, sonorous style of Old Believers’ church to the haunting songs of spiritual wanderers.

The ensemble has presented its interpretation of Russian church and spiritual folk music on extensive concert tours in Russia and Europe and was multifold prizewinner of renowned choral competitions. Sirin took part in the 1st European Symposium for Choral Music in Ljubliana, World Symposium for Choral Music in Rotterdam, gave performances at various festivals, like the festival in Thoronet and the festival of Old Lyon (France), Musica Sacra in Marktoberdorf (Germany), Old Music in Jaroslaw (Poland), Musica Sacra in Maastricht ( Holland), Trialogos (Estonia), Isle de France , Lufthansa Baroque Festival (Great Britain), Cork International Choral festival (Ireland), Sacred Music in Fribourg (Switzerland), Festival of Sacred Music in Fez, Bangkok Christmas Festival (Thailand), Europalia (Belgium) and many others. Sirin’s performances were included in the program for celebrating 2000 years of christianity in Jerusalem.

As a special request of Sirin, the Russian composer Vladimir Martynov set texts from the Old Testament’s book The Lamentation of Jeremiah to music. The stage version of The Lamentation of Jeremiah, where all roles are performed by Sirin members, had more than 150 performances in Russia, France (as part of the official program of Avignon Theatre Festival), Italy, Germany, Estonia and Sweden. It was awarded with Golden Mask, the highest distinction in Russian theatre, as the best theatrical production of the year.

…consummate vocal skills and absolute professionalism. This choir deserves the mark “excellent and higher”. (Compact, Spain)

…the genuine feeling carried in the group’s performance stirred profound emotions… offering clear lessons to those who fancy the worldwide supremacy of the English choral tradition (The Independent, UK)

…beauty of this singing resembles the singing of seraphim (Esslingen Zeitung, Germany)

…Immediate shock from the first sounds… After listening to the recording you have only one wish: to hear this rare repertoire at a concert, to have direct contact with these superb and exciting voices. (Diapason, France)
