Gavin Duffy’s Lecture on Sir John Lavery, Fundraiser for Highlanes Gallery
Gavin Duffy’s Lecture on Sir John Lavery, Fundraiser for Highlanes Gallery, Thursday 22nd November at 7.00pm
Dragons’ Den star, Gavin Duffy, will give a fundraising, public lecture on the artist, Sir John Lavery in aid of Highlanes Gallery, Laurence Street, Drogheda, on Thursday 22nd of November at 7pm. Earlier this year, Gavin won on TV3’s Celebrity Mastermind where his specialist subject was the Belfast born painter John Lavery 1856 – 1941.
“I have always been fascinated by Lavery” says Drogheda man, Gavin. “This lecture will be different in that it is not a fine art lecture discussing the painter’s use of pallet, light and brush strokes but rather the story of the amazing life of Sir John and his wife, American-Irish, heiress, Lady Hazel Lavery. Lady Lavery appeared on Irish pound notes until the seventies.”
Highlanes Gallery which opened in 2006 is sited in a unique building gifted to the people of Drogheda by the Franciscans; €4 million euro was raised to transform it into one of the country’s most important municipal art galleries. It houses the Drogheda Municipal Art Collection, which has many significant works by Irish and international artists dating from the 18th century to current times, including work by Nano Reid, L.S. Lowry, Mainie Jellett, Gerard Dillon, Mary Swanzy, Gabrielle Ricciardelli, James McNeill Whistler, Gereon Krebber and Jackie Nickerson.
Highlanes Gallery Curator Aoife Ruane said, “We are delighted that Gavin has agreed to do this lecture here in the gallery on November 22nd as a fundraiser. Lavery was the world’s most sought after portrait painter in the early 20th century and painted the most powerful person in the world at that time, Queen Victoria. He also painted the last Russian and Austrian Royals, British Prime Ministers, German Industrialists, American Presidents, Heiresses and Hollywood stars. In short, his portraiture covered from Queen Vic’ to Child star Shirley Temple.”
Aoife Ruane concluded. “Tickets are only €10 each but it is strictly on a first-come first-served basis. There will be refreshments on the night provided by Relish who now operate the popular café in the Gallery. We have kept it at an affordable price but we know it will sell out quickly so make sure to get your tickets now.”

All Ages Music Showcase Drogheda
All Ages Music Showcase to launch this September in McHugh’s Venue The launch of the All Ages Music Showcase will take place in McHugh’s Venue, Drogheda on Sunday 16th of September. Admission to the event is at the affordable cost of €5.00 with a chance to buy tickets on the night or prior the event.
All Ages Music Showcase (AAMS) is a [weekly, fortnightly, monthly] showcase that aims to travel to local community areas in order to showcase the musical talent within that area.
Although the concept is familiar, AAMS will host a wide range of genres from Hip-Hop/Rap to Rock and Folk, offering opportunities that each act will find beneficial in an individual manner.
Acts can submit their details via Facebook or email. Biography, images and links are not something the AAMs team need; understanding that not everyone has the ability or access to such facilities. Each act that is submitted will be accounted for, guaranteeing that no act will be over-looked and each act will have a chance to perform at the one in many AAMS events.
After submission the AAMS team will make their judgement and five acts will be announced for a particular date. On the night, two bands will be declared as most favourable; one winning a free recording studio session with Bettystown-based Yip Yap Recordings, the other a professional photo-shoot with Dan Butler Photography.
All acts will be given honest yet critical feedback, a short PR consultation and the option to contact AAMS at any time for free advice, guidance and a range of opportunities.
The idea came about when Tony King, drummer of local-band Machine Gun Baby and Katie Hogan, NuMu Promotions, noticed the lack of opportunities in local community areas. Based in Mornington and Laytown, Tony King and Katie Hogan vowed to create AAMS in order to help kick-start and direct young aspiring musicians towards their goal.
The Machine Gun Baby drummer explains “Drogheda is a huge town, a very vibrant town with a lively music scene. As a hard-working musician I can honestly look back and admit I would have loved this opportunity. I’ve gigged all over the country yet I still come up against the same problems. I know how tough it is out there, you need to be tough, persistent and have genuine potential. Unfortunately at the moment it’s not a case of what you know, it’s who you know. I would like to change that or at least make a difference in the right direction, for the next generation of musicians.”
“I see this industry from a completely different point of view yet I agree completely. I’m tired of ignoring and not trusting our youth. I think it is this exact problem that creates anti-social behaviour. I work on a number of all-ages shows where big acts come to play for their underage fans; I think it is fantastic when some Irish and international bands take this approach. The catch is you have to travel to Dublin so we’ve decided to bring this to Drogheda with thanks to McHugh’s Venue.” States Katie Hogan All Ages Music Showcase will take place Sunday September 16th in McHugh’s Venue, Drogheda. Doors 3pm – 7pm. Tickets are €5.00 available on the door or visit www.facebook.com/allagesmusicshowcase to pre-buy tickets. For more information please contact allagesmusicshowcase@gmail.com For general / press enquires please contact Katie Hogan on hogan.pr@gmail.com or 086 069 7004

Dear All,
I would like to draw your attention to an exciting new initiative we have launched in Drogheda. The Drogheda International Classical Music Series aims to provide local audiences with a platform to see and hear the best of National and International musicians. As the setting for this series, Drogheda will continue to be an important hub for classical music, highlighting its most beautiful cultural venues and buildings. The programme is focused on mainstream Classical repertoire, combining the popular with the unfamiliar, and performed by both distinguished and lesser-known, but equally talented musicians. The Series will complement the work of the existing classical music initiatives in Co. Louth supporting the development of new audiences and continued appreciation.
I am attaching this season’s brochure and I encourage you all to come along to the concerts.
